Am I in the wrong for refusing to pay for my neighbor’s fence and now dealing with petty retaliation?

Imagine waking up one day to find your elderly neighbor (whom you thought was a friend) confronting you at your doorstep about damage to her precious (but not well-kept) fence. This, of course, is damage you know nothing about. Although you understand where this lady might be coming from in assuming that it was you, you go to great lengths in trying to explain to her that someone else must have hit her fence with their car. After all, it's a busy street and people have to drive past that fence all the time over the weekends to get to the public park.
Still, you get zero sympathy or understanding from the woman. In fact, she goes a step further, digging her heels into the ground and demanding that you do the so-called “neighborly thing” and pay for the damage that you didn't cause. It turns out that no matter how hard you try to convince this woman that you are not the culprit, nothing will get her to change her mind.
This is the dynamic that the author of this anecdote found himself in. Keep scrolling below for this full account of the conflict and for some of the strongest reactions from several members of this online community.
